What is waterjet cutting?

Waterjet cutting involves the use of a waterjet machine to cut through a variety of materials. The waterjet machine works by directing a high-pressure stream of water mixed with an abrasive substance at the material in order to precisely cut. Waterjet cutting is an alternative to other methods of cutting, like laser cutting. Waterjet cutting has many benefits compared to other methods. Because no heat is involved, there are no burn marks on the materials, and therefore, no finishing required. Waterjet cutting is highly accurate and can cut through thicker materials than other cutting methods.

What materials can a waterjet be used on?

  • Aluminum
  • Stainless steel
  • Steel
  • Wood
  • Rubber
  • Foam
  • Plastic
  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Glass
  • Granite
  • Bronze
  • Acrylic
  • & more

Abrasives Used in Waterjet Cutting

While the high-pressure water stream of the waterjet is ideal for cutting numerous semi-soft materials, often an abrasive is added in order to cut harder materials like metals, stone, and aluminum. These abrasive particles range in size from 50 mesh to 220 mesh, with 80 mesh being the most common. The variety of different particle sizes allow for a custom cut no matter the size, thickness, material, or finish needed to meet your goals.

Commonly, the abrasive garnet is used for waterjet cutting applications. It is a hard, durable mineral that is sharp when crushed, making it a popular and versatile abrasive for many different projects that require a clean cut.

How is waterjet cutting used for industries in Kansas City and beyond?

Transportation Industry

Waterjet cutting can be used in the creation of components for vehicles of all shapes and sizes. From metal panels to glass windows and cut foam cushioning, the CNC technology of waterjet machining ensures that the cuts are precise, burr-free, and exact for all parts. This makes waterjet machining a valuable resource for the building and assembly of agricultural vehicles, trains, and other automobiles.

Architectural Industry

Waterjet cutting is also used for the building and furnishing of homes, commercial buildings, restaurants, and more. The waterjet’s ability to cleanly cut stone, granite, glass, and wood aids in the creation and assembly of tabletops, countertops, custom flooring, custom stone applications, and more.

McKiney Manufacturing is also proud to assist new and existing businesses, organizations, or individuals in Kansas City with the creation of custom signage for their buildings or homes!

Increasing your Productivity: How McKiney can be a resource to your business in Kansas City

Time Savings

While lead times rise for many manufacturers, McKiney is proud to offer a quick turnaround time.

You’ll love the time you save with waterjet cutting vs. other methods. The waterjet is one of the fastest CNC machines, as it can cut up to 2700 IPM! Its efficiency and ability to make a precise cut every time allows us to complete your project on-time and on-budget.

Looking to start a project? We’re efficient in answering your questions and quotes too, whether you’re local or remote! Our typical turnaround time for calls is 24 hours Monday — Thursday, and by Monday if you reach out on a Friday.

Material Savings

The narrow kerf of the waterjet saves material, which means saving your costs and being more environmentally-friendly! We also save materials by nesting. Nesting refers to fitting the maximum amount of parts/components into one material sheet as physically possible in order to reduce any wasted material.

Array nesting is when you have one die or one shape to cut multiple times. It’s the simplest type of material nesting. This also does not require the use of nesting software. Rather, it can be done by simply cutting and pasting the shape with the required space in between.

Automated nesting is when you have multiple shapes to cut. Using nesting software, the diverse shapes can be arranged in a way that maximizes the material.
